Motorcycles: Affordable and Fun Recreation
Why motorcycles? What makes them so good and why is touring on a motorcycle fun?
Motorcycles, also known as motorbikes, bikes or cycles, are the one of the most common and affordable type of vehicles around. There are reportedly around 200 million motorcycles in the world.
In addition, motorcycles are very fuel efficient, which makes them attractive for financial and environmental reasons. Compared to an average car, a motorcycle has lower carbon emissions and better fuel economy.
Recently, electric motorcycles and scooters have been increasing in popularity due to rising fuel prices and the motorcycle’s environmentally-friendly lack of emissions. They are also much more affordable than electric cars.
More than just cost or environmental concerns, motorcycles have a certain romance to them that is appealing to people from all walks of life. While it’s true that some people may think of bike riders as long-haired, tattooed outlaws, motorcycle owners and riders are as varied as car owners.
As perhaps the most American of vehicles, motorcycles have come to symbolize the freedom and adventure of the open road as seen in the iconic 1969 American film “Easy Rider.” The movie, starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, tells the ultimately tragic story of two bikers who travel together through the American South in search of freedom.
The film’s soundtrack contains the song "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf which has also become synonymous with bikers in popular culture. The song, whose lyrics speak of going out on the highway to look for adventure and racing the wind, has versions that include motorcycle sounds. Since its release, it has become an anthem of sorts for bikers.
In one of the unforgettable scenes from the movie, the two bikers throw away their wrist watches to symbolize their freedom and declare their newly unfettered status by saying that time no longer matters to them.
Indeed, the motorcycle makes a strong statement about its rider. To motorcycle lovers, the vehicle has is the symbol of freedom, mobility, independence, individuality and self-reliance.
Enthusiasts wax poetic about the joys of feeling the wind in their hair while traveling down scenic roads. They say it’s as close as a person can come to being as free as bird while staying on the ground.
When it comes to traveling and adventure, motorcycles are a lot of fun. There’s nothing quite like packing up and hitting the road on your bike. It’s liberating and allows you to see things from a different perspective. You take in new sights, sounds, tastes and smells that expand your soul. Interacting with different people from many different places can be a deeply spiritual and moving experience.
While traveling, your mode of transportation can greatly affect your mood and contentment. Journeying by bike is a unique experience best enjoyed by free spirits who love adventure and lack of restrictions while wandering the roads.
Pitching you tent under the stars, cooking meals over an open fire, and communing with nature at it’s finest is one of the main goals of those who love the outdoors and travel. Camping is a very popular form of recreation among bikers.
Even when camping, motorcycle riders, unlike those who travel by car, necessarily travel light because of the vehicle’s more limited carrying capacity. This is one reason why riders are perceived as being more carefree and less concerned with material possessions than other vacationers. The motorcycle tourist is basically a backpacker on two wheels. He brings with him exactly what he needs and nothing more.
Aside from a love of nature, camping also gives one the freedom to roam and explore since he will be bringing food and shelter along. He won’t need to stop at a hotel but can camp where he wishes.
Of course, camping out also saves money since it is far cheaper than finding hotel accommodations. This lets the biker’s travel budget stretch farther than normal. In addition, staying in a campground with other vacationers is more conducive to social gatherings than hotels would be. Gathering around a camp fire with others is a fun activity that most campers welcome with enthusiasm. It’s a great way to meet interesting people and learn about exciting destinations from other tourists.
For those who hanker for more solitary spots, camping is also an ideal way to find beautiful isolated locales off the beaten path to get away from it all and relax.
In conclusion, motorcycle touring is an exciting activity and an eye-opener for people who want less structured and more adventurous recreation activities.
